I am trying to find information about Newmans College and the motif seen on this stein. Even though it has lost both its lid and its handle, it poses curious questions.

On the left side - "Newmans College" below a three paneled scene showing an early football player, winged Victory holding a football(?), and a baseball player with bat over his shoulder. At the top of the scene are six banners, each with a different design. Behind the banners seems to be a roof, suggesting an arena, and a hanging lamp(?) with the word STANFORD.

The center scene shows a St. Bernard, a cat and a wooden bucket. Above this scene are the words "Dewey-The Rescuer Worlds Champion" and "Blue Ribbon Winner. St. Bernard". Below the scene are the words "Famous Painting Exhibited", "Newmans College", "Cor. Eddy & Powell St. San Francisco, Cal."

The scene on the right is similar to the left, and is again presented above the words "Newmans College". At left is a baseball player with bat, what seems to be another baseball player, and a football player. This time the hanging lamp(?) is labeled CALIFORNIA. Only five hanging banners are seen in this scene, only one of which is also seen in the left scene. The questions are (1) what, where and when was Newmans College, (2) who was "Dewey - The Rescuer", and (3) how are the various sports figures and symbols to be understood?

I have Google'd "Newmans College" and "Dewey Rescuer St. Bernard" without any luck. Les Paul advises that this stein is not uncommon, but who can tell us what it is about?
