Rich, The article actually says that the capacity mark was usually in front from 1900-1920. My take is that this was a phase-out period. He also states that they "..are roughly divided into the following age categories." I think there is plenty of room to date these steins and I would also agree with you that the pre-1900 era is more likely for brewery steins with the mark in front. Have you seen many non-brewery steins with the marking in front? Ron
