Capacity mark location was at the discretion of the factory. Most factories chose to use the back, just to the left of the handle. However, there are several variations. The Regensburg factory of Fritz Thenn 1874-1886 used the front for that entire period. The Freising factory that became HR used the front only during their first year, 1876. Many brewery and pub steins were made by the small family run potteries, who didn't use factory marks so we have no idea who made what. However, I think a good rule of thumb is that if the stein is blue and gray saltglaze it is probably pre 1900 and if it is ivory stoneware it is probaly post 1900. I don't believe that front marking can be deligated to specific years.
