Thanks! That is interesting and now I feel I know pretty much the whole story. There are a number of small differences. Thewalt did try to brighten up the stein and the herring came out blueish; while your original is a more natural grey. The new one added a band of gold trim below and a silver trim on the lid. The new one also leaves the handle's monkey face in the background color which makes it harder to interpret. The brown of the original was better. It looks like the finish on the old pewter cat was better too.
