I too have asked this question. Apparently there are a few who know the secret. Also, on line you can buy darkening agents but the search is difficult. I have used oxalic acid to darken a polished lid, but the key is exposure to air. It is a bit tricky to keep the acid on the lid AND let it have air exposure--dipping and letting it dry is not enough--it will streak. I used tissue paper (or you can use clothe or etc just make sure it is very fine so there is no pattern of the clothe left on the lid) and spray the acid on it and keep it wet. If it is not satisfactory you can polish it again and start over. Keep in mind a lot of lids are supposed to be shiny--they are not pewter to begin with. Good luck.
