Hello everyone, I was hoping that one of the experts on this forum could help
me identify this container. It is very detailed! The lid is copper in color with
3 cats w/ grapevines and wine bottles in a courtyard. The lid also has a Jewish
star on it with banners that read in Latin (I believe they say, "Long live
the following drunken cats"). The rim of the lid is a lighter color metal
than the handle emblem (see below) and reads in German. I think that it says
that it was made in 1874 by the brother of Carl or it might say that the
birthday of the brother of Carl is 1874. There are a few German words that I am
unable to make out as the letters are very intricate. The handle emblem is also
metal, pewter in color and is of a ram peering into a chalice. I wonder 1) what
type of metals were used, 2) if the body is indeed crystal or glass, 3) what the
symbology of the characters are, 4) what this container was used for & 5)
what exactly the Latin & German translate to in English. I welcome any help
& or questions. As I am not sure how to add my html of the photos, the
pictures can be viewed at: http://s255.photobucket.com/albums/hh126/redefiningreusables/?action=view¤t=2d0dc2c2.pbw
