Another comment on collecting modern steins: it makes a big difference if you are buying them new or second hand, and if you have to pay postage or not. German labor and materials are very expensive, but they made and are still making far more steins than collectors can collect. So a new stein costs a lot and the price drops to perhaps around a third of the amount for most steins almost immediately. However, if you buy second hand such as on ebay, you do not suffer that new stein drop and can get a 50 year old German stein for less than the price of a new Chinese one. The price of many modern steins, however, is low enough that the cost of mailing is a significant portion of your cost.
