My relative in Germany showed me a fool-proof way to tell if a regimental stein is authentic. Open the top and point the bottom of the stein towards a light source. Look into the stein. If it is authentic, you will see what appears to be a wood-cut or linedrawing depicting a military activity related to the regiment. This picture is not visible when just looking into the stein casually.
