John, I know you found a Simon Peter Gerz I stein and were perplexed by the use of the Roman numeral I. In searching past Prosit issues for a presentation on Thewalt I will be giving, I ran across an article by Pat Mausov on Artists of the Westerwald in the September 1998 issue of Prosit, page 897. The article shows a picture of Peter Gerz II with his wife Anna Maria Gelhard, circa 1865. I don't know the age of Simon Peter Gerz when he founded his firm in 1862, but the photo looks like Peter Gerz II would be too old to be his son. The article does not explain his relationship to Simon Peter Gerz, so I don't know if this is a typo or an unexplained mystery. I thought you might want to follow it up with Gene Manusov to see if he could shed further light on the mystery. If anyone else has further information on this mystery, please post it here so John can update his article. Ron
