I would like some additional elaboration and clarification on Mettlach "etched" steins. You say in your article that the "designs (were)made from colored slips of clay which are separated and given detail by the incised lines". I always thought the images were painted within the lines, but from your description are they made somewhat like cloissone? Or ground up colored clay? What is a slip of clay? Thanks.
