Thanks, Walt. It sounds like the clay colors were adhered in some way to the stein, be it "painted" on, or in the mold process. It is fascinating that it may be a lost art. I have some "etched" steins but the colors seem to be painted on (no Mettlachs--the Mettlachs I have are all the applied relief type). Does this mean that I am wrong about my steins--that in fact they too may have colored clay, or does it mean they ARE painted on and only Mettlach did this process. If the latter, I sure would like to get a Mettlach etched! The newer ones (80's) are not made like the old ones I take it.
