Hi Walt, I thought you and others would be interested in what I've learned and done about my cracked ruby stein. I spoke via email with a well known glass repairer in Idaho (you can find it on the internet but did not want to give name as I did not want to "recommend")and the crack is sealed and air, which causes refraction, is pushed out. I used a kit which I bought at a auto parts store by Permantex. It is essentially penetrating super glue that cures when exposed to UV light/the sun. I used it and the crack is still there, but much less visible. With the kit they give you some plastic film for flat surface cracks as well as the injector for bullseyes. This repairer I spoke to says that their results are similar--reduces the appearance, but will not make it disappear completely. There may be other stein collectors out there that can try this easy fix. It also stabilizes the crack and can reduce the crack from spreading. In addition, keep steins out of areas that have fluctuations in temperature if it is cracked such as windows, near furnaces, etc.
