I have two regimentals with this style hinge and lid attachment, both are pottery and similar to the stein in question. One is from the 34th Field Artillery dated 1901-03, the other an Infantry stein from the 53rd, 1901-03. What's interesting about the infantry stein is that the lid is missing. Usually a detriment to a stein but in the case of this discussion a great help. Looking down from the top of the stein the shank is fitted into the dovetail recess and then the sides of the dovetail filled with pewter. Both of these steins are very attractive heavy relief.
