Germans seem to like tureens and lidded bowls and seem to give special names and purposes to them. This type, since it has an opening for a ladle and comes with cups, must have been used for a type of drink that one would ladle. That would not be beer or regular wine. My bet would be gluwein, a hot spiced wine concoction very popular during the winter holidays. You can google for recipes or buy pre-mixed spices from German importers.
