There is a Mettlach 24 on ebay 380079541349 with some close up photo's. One can read the text above the four panels but the script and meaning is difficult. The Beer stein library has smaller photo's (and a different lid). They give the text and translation as: “Kein grösser Gut als froher Muth.” (There is no greater possession than a happy disposition.) “Nach hetzen u. jagen, ein Trunk mit Behagen.” (After chasing and shooting, a drink is a pleasure.) “Das küssen in Ehren, dem Jäger nicht zu wehren.” (An honorable kiss cannot be denied the hunter.) “Uns schenkt Gott einen sanften Tod” (God blesses us with a gentle death.) I have a number of questions raised by all this. First and foremost is: Is this a famous song or poem, and a well-known illustration or woodcut of the verses?
