Original personalization, whether an inscription on the pewter, engraved in glass, or painted on the body of a stein, does not detract from the value of a stein, and it may hold appeal to some collectors. Presentation steins, as for weddings or regimentals or student steins, may be considered incomplete if they do not have personal dedications. On the other hand, initials or names which are amateurishly scratched into pewter do detract from desirability.
