Ken, It sounds like you are describing 'threaded relief steins'. Go to the Beer Stein Library and do a search on "threaded relief". There will be a number of steins for you to view to see if this is the type of steins that you are referring to. Diesinger, as well as other companies, used this type of decorating process.
