I sold a stein on eBay today. Can anyone help me with more info on the piece. eBay Item number: 140288990823 See photo on eBay listing! Half Liter Gray Stoneware Relief Stein—circa 1900 This is a most unusual old piece. Three relief barefoot figures seem to be doing the harvest. It's most comical in appearance. They may be harvest gods; they are certainly not dressed like farmers. It is most interesting relief all around the body. The size is questionable. Capacity mark is on the front top of the stein (study photo). It is stamped 1LJ. When capacity mark is in this position it indicates an older stein, usually made before 1900. When I bught this stein it was listed as 1/2 liter. The mark indicates 1L. So I filled it with beer. It held three-fourths of a liter. Beer is not included in purchase. Stein is in great shape. Aging pewter lid is nice dark patina. Thumblift and hinge are in perfect working order. Lid closes snugly. Interesting marks on bottom show outline of a castle-like structure stamped into the earthenware. There is a mold number (146) which means nothing unless you can find the maker and a catalog for the company. The name GRENZAU is stamped on the bottom in capital letters. Grenzau was a town in the Westerwald that later was merged with another village to become Höhr-Grenzhausen.
