Sean, The monogram Stewart mentioned is usually referred to by its German name, Zirkel. The Zirkel can help determine the identity of the student association, but unfortunately they are not unique. The association colors and coat-of-arms, Wappen, would also be necessary to accurately identify the association. The society associated with your stein is most probably Rhenopalatia Heidelberg or Rhenopalatia München. You can see samples of their Zirkels and compare them with the one on your stein here: Rhenopalatia Heidelberg -- http://tinyurl.com/85qaql and Rhenopalatia München -- http://tinyurl.com/8vjvsb If you are interested in finding out more about the Zirkel, go to this site's home page, click on 'featured stein', and then on 'archives'. Scroll down to the article titled "A Student Stein" in 2005. There are also some good articles on German student associations in the library on this site.
