John McGregor's HR book shows a mark similar to your "spikey circle" mark, although it has a dot in the center. John identifies it as a "quality control" mark used at the HR Freising factory from 1876-86. I don't see where he states a basis for that attribution. If you can post a photo of the stein, someone may be able to help you more. Ron
