~ Das Jahr ist gut ~

The first verse comes from an old Schwabian drinking song dating back to the early 1800s. The second verse is an old German proverb, possibly dating back to the times when only the nobility could afford to eat with forks. This large PUG (printed under glaze), pouring stein is marked with the Mettlach logo, mold number 2178 and decor number 956, dated 1895.

Das Jahr ist gut,
Braunbier ist gerathen.

Mit der Gabel ist's ne Ehr,
mit dem Löffel kriegt man mehr.
The year is good,
brown beer is a success.

There is an honor (in eating) with the fork,
(but) one gets more with the spoon.
