|~ Die Weisheit guter Zecher ist ~|
|This self explanatory verse is signed "Mirza Schaffy" and is apparently from a set of poems or songs published in 1851 by Friedrich von Bodenstedt (1819-1892). Bodenstedt studied under a famous Russian writer, Professor Schaffy Vaseh (1796-1852), in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) Georgia and adopted Mirza Schaffy as his pen name in honor of his mentor. The two people shown in the photo-transfers on the sides might be descendents of the two mentioned above or composers that put the lyrics to music. The porcelain stein is ca. late 1800's.|
Die Weisheit guter Zecher ist
in früh und später Stunde
das guter Trunk in Humpen ist
und neuer Witz im Munde.
The wisdom of a good drinker is
in early and late hours
(to have) good drink in the stein
and new wit in the mouth.
