Here's a short history of the alcoholic beverages drunk by the Germans throughout the ages on this slat-glazed, stoneware stein, ca. early 1900's.
Die alten Deutschen tranken Met. Der Landsknecht trank den Wein vom Rhein. Wir aber trinken früh und spät dich edlen Gerstensaft gerät.	The ancient Germans drank mead. The troopers drank the wine from the Rhein. We drink early and late the surviving noble barley juice (beer).
