| These were the good old days on the Rhein River with the Old Germans and the Roman occupiers depicted on this etched stein ca. 1900. The verse is from a German student drinking song called, "Tacitus und die alten Deutschen" which derives its verses from a work of the Roman historian Tacitus in 89 AD called "Germanii" (the Germans). This verse is sometimes seen with the word "Germanen" replacing "Deutschen". The letters "SPQR" on the Roman's shield stands for the Latin phrase, "Senatus Populusque Romanus" ("The Senate and People of Rome"). This was the motto of the Roman Republlic and appeared on Roman buildings, coins and banners and armor of the Roman Legions. | |

The old Germans lived on both sides of the Rhein. They laid on bear skins and always drank one after another. |
