Although the banner on this stein represents the German State Flag in use from 1949-1959, it
was also used as the German National Flag from 1919-1933. This stein can be dated to having
been made during the 1919-1933 period and might have been bought by someone in a militarized,
political group called the Reichsbanner (Government Flag) or Schwarz-Rot-Gold (black-red-gold)
which was formed in 1924 during the Weimar Republic for the purpose of defending the parliamentary
democracy and continued later in the anti-Nazi resistance.
