These are mottos and salutations of the Turner (gymnast) societies founded by Ludwig Jahn in the early 1800's to foster good health and unity in the shaping the new Germany. The etched stein is marked with the Mettlach logo and mold number 1914 and dated 1896.
 
Lasst Kraft uns erwerben
mit Herz und mit Hand
zu leben und sterben
für's heilige Vaterland.

Gut Heil! 		Let's strive for strength
with heart and with hand
to live and to die
for the holy fatherland.
