Lustig gelebt und seelig gestorben
das heißt dem Teufel die Rechnung verdorben.
(A life) merrily lived and spiritually died
is what the devil calls a rotten reckoning.
 
This verse can also be seen on the earthenware stein without lid marked with the logo of John Maresch and number 9736, ca. 1900, shown below.
