~ Rede wenig, rede wahr ~

This verse is about living moderately and conserving money which is a way to survive, but all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy. The verse is transcribed as written on the stein and contains a little dialect from Alsace-Lorraine and possibly spelling errors. The small, blue/gray, salt-glazed stein is ca. late 1800's and the size reflects the conservatism.

Rede wenig, rede wahr,
was du zehrest, zahla baar.
Speak little, speak true,
what you live on, pay for in cash.

This same verse is shown below on a stoneware relief stein made by Reinhold Hanke, mold #151, ca. 1900.
