~ Schach dem Könige ~

There's only one time in chess when one declares "check" and that's when the King comes in jeopardy of being taken in the next move. Schachmatt (check mate) occurs when no move can save the King from being taken. Schach dem Könige! (literally "check the King") is declared on this etched Mettlach Chess stein marked with the Mettlach logo and mold # 2048 and dated 1892.

Schach dem Könige! Check!

Note:   This stein is often found with the ceramic insert lid shown to the right. The inscription, "Ludus Ludorum" is Latin and means "Game of Games."
