Here is a motto for a cavalry unit on this reservist's stein named to Gefreiter Schmidt (Lance Corporal Schmidt) who had served in the Hussar Regiment #14 garrisoned at Cassel from 1896 to 1899. Such remembrance steins were purchased by reservists at the end of their service times, ca. 1899.
Stolz zu Roß die Kavallerie, auf den Posten spät und früh.	Proudly mounted, the cavalry, at their posts late and early.
