~ Wer mit mir schliesst einen Packt ~
This is a character (figural) stein of a devil (AKA Mefistopheles) marked "1565 Germany" made by Steinzeugwerke (see: Old Catalogs" on the SCI Website) ca. 1900. The verse is a spoof on a centuries old German myth where Faust makes a pact with the devil to sell his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. In this case the pact with the devil-stein is insuring non-stop beer. The most famous version of the story was written in the 19th century by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe.
Wer mit mir schliesst einen Packt, dem bleibt der Magen stets intakt. |
Whoever seals a pact (contract) with me, will always have his stomach full (of beer). |
