~ Wider den Tod ist ~

This is one in a series of twelve "Book Steins" made by Villeroy & Boch at Mettlach for various professions. The books are entitled according to those that one in the profession would read in order to become qualified. This one is marked 2001 B and dated 1898 and is for a physician. Note the Caduceus (Physician's staff) in the inlay and the "owl on books" thumblift symbolizing knowledge.

Wider den Tod ist
kein Kräutlein gewachsen.
No living thing
survives death's sting.
