~ Tauscht der Bursch sein Ränzel ein ~
This cute early 1900's relief stein is signed "KB" for Karl Beuler. (see Chris Wheeler's Stein Marks for more on him) This is the third verse of a student drinking song titled "Die Lindenwirtin" (Keeper of the Lime Tree Inn) written by R. Baumbach in 1876. (see translation: "Keinen Tropfen im Becker mehr.." for the first verse.) The song title is shown at the stein bottom. The song was also made into a play called "die Streuner" (The Vagabond).
Tauscht der Bursch sein Ränzel ein gegen ein Krug voll Wein, Tät zum Gehn sich wenden. Spricht die Wirtin: "Junges Blut hast ja Mantel, Stab und Hut! Trink und lass dich pfänden!" |
The lad traded in his knapsack for a jug of wine, as he turned to leave. The inn hostess said: "Young blood you still have a coat, staff and hat! Drink and obligate yourself to me!" |
