~ Probieren geht über studieren ~
The porcelain lid on this cute little glass, student stein (ca. early 1900's) shows a student society member drinking his beer and ignoring his books. The text on this stein is from a German proverb whose meaning is very close to an old English proverb: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating", or more commonly, "The proof is in the pudding" which dates back to the 14th Century. Back then, the pudding would have been a meat dish, possibly spoiled, and one would not know if it was safe to eat until eaten. In other words, to know the truth about something you have to actually try it, not just look at it. The image on this stein seems to be a play on the words of the verse, implying that testing (the beer) is better than studying (the lessons).

Probieren geht über studieren Testing is better than studying
