~ Schmied von Kochel ~
Der Schmied von Kochel was a legendary warrior from the town of Kochel just south of Munich. He was attributed with knocking down the Munich city gate using his heavy iron bar as a battering ram in the Bavarian uprising of 1705. This action is shown on the lid of the stein and in a painting by Franz Defregger shown below. His myth inspired the Munich beer, Kochelbräu, represented by this handsome stein ca. 1900. You can read more about this stein and the Smith of Kochel in the June 1986 issue of Prosit. For the probable Zinngiesserei (pewterer) manufacturing the lid, see Chris Wheeler's Stein Marks listing for "Ganter & Co.".
