~ Wer nicht mag blechen ~
This relief pottery stein features an appropriate verse for Shakespeare's famous drinking characters Bardolph and Falstaff. The stein is marked 418 and because of the handle design was probably made by Marzi & Remy ca. 1900. The mold and design is identical to the Matthias Girmscheid stein, mold #419. The translation below is quite literal. The meaning of the second line might make more sense as "leave an IOU" or "put it on my tab." Note the German spelling of Falstaff is Fallstaff.

Wer nicht mag blechen
Der lass das Zechen.
Whoever doesn't want to pay
(just) leaves (ignores) the checks (bills).
