~ Zwo Affen lieber denn einmal Fieber ~

The monkey or ape (Affe) is the beer culture symbol for drunkenness (similar to having a monkey on one's back). The idea is that "It's better to be drunk twice than to get sick once". Notice that "Zwo" is the cognate of the English "two" and is used in certain circumstances instead of "Zwei" (two). This is a blue/gray, salt-glazed, stoneware stein ca. 1900.

Zwo Affen lieber denn einmal Fieber. Two monkeys rather than a fever once.
