Schierholz Catalog

The Heuäcker Brothers founded a porcelain factory in the city of Plaue in 1816. Christian Gottfried Schierholz was brought in as a partner when one of the Heuäcker brothers died. Upon the demise of the second brother in 1818, Schierholz assumed ownership of the company, amd shortly thereafter the Schierholz name was adopted. The company was a pioneer in the production of lithophanes by 1849 and in 1865, they converted production to only decorative porcelain—figurines, vases, and candlesticks etc. Modeler Edmund Haase joined the company on 1st April 1884 and by 1900 had created an extensive range of character steins. In 1899, the business became a public limited company, changing its name to Von Schierholz Porzellan Manufaktur Plaue G.m.b.H. In 1972 it was nationalized to VEB Porzellan Manufaktur, Plaue. During 1986 to 1990, a limited range of character steins was manufactured for Rastal GmbH & Co. KG. Upon German re-unification in 1990, the company's name reverted back to Von Schierholz Porzellan Manufaktur Plaue G.m.b.H. at which time the full catalog of character steins were produced, using mainly original molds. Since 1995 it has been part of the Königlich privilegierte Porzellanmanufaktur Tettau G.m.b.H. Steins were manufactured during the 1890's-1906 & 1986-1995.

Most Schierholz steins are marked, but for many years they were known to English-speakers only as "Musterschutz" because of the green stampled word on the base. This word actually means "protected", an assertion of copyright claim, and it was not until SCI Master Steinologist Ron Fox unlocked the source of the "hashtag" or "tic-tac-toe" mark that the Schierholz name was attached to these steins.
