Berlin, Germany

SCI members visiting Berlin should make it a point to see the fine collection of steins and drinking vessels in this modern - and uncrowded - museum. The day we visited there were more security personnel than visitors, and the brightly lighted and spaciously organized displays could be thoroughly enjoyed at a leisurely pace.

The top floor of the museum houses collections from Renaissance to Art Nouveau and Deco periods, and the glass and ceramics are outstanding. On display are more than 150 examples of early stoneware (Westerwald, Sachsen and Creussen), numerous exquisite ivory tankards, at least four "Böttger" porcelain pieces dating to the first five years of porcelain production in Europe (1710-1715), many examples of drinking vessels made of silver as well as unusual materials like serpentine, coconut, ostrich eggs and Nautilus shells, many glass steins, pokals, beakers and goblets, a collection of faience and some very fine steins from the Jugendstil period.

Like most European museums, photography without flash is allowed. Unfortunately, I left my camera in the hotel!
