Absence of makers mark.

Greetings,
I have what I think is a Hanke stein mold #302 stamped into the bottom. It has no other marks. I have heard that early Westerwald makers sometimes didn’t sign or mark their work. Can anyone corroborate that? BTW, this and the rest of my collection was purchased from a reputable dealer in Munich about 1957, when my family lived there.

Sometimes only the mold number shows on the bottom of the stein. Sometimes the mold number also shows on the body of the stein. The Beer Stein Library has the best photos of steins by mold number and by manufacturer. You can search all the catalogs by either mold number or by the German verse on the stein. There is no 302 listed for Hanke however.

The SCI web site has some old manufacturing catalogs that can be searched by mold number. It does list a mold 302 for Hanke. The photos are only in black and white and are not high quality.
