I am totally new to this, several given to me,, trying to identify marks. Where do I go to do this? How do I get started?

About 40 years ago I was on a business trip in New Jersey. One evening we visited the mother of one of the gentleman traveling with us. Towards the end of the evening the mother presented me with a stein. The woman was from Germany or Austria, unfortunately she had no info on the stein other than she believed it was old and came originally from somewhere in Europe.How can I get some info on the stein. It has markings and I can send a picture. Please offer some direction. Thank you
