Does anyone know if there are variations in the thumblifts for the Mettlach occupational series steins? I own several and most have this plain thumblift:

    thumblift 1

However, two have this acorn one:

    thumblift 2

The acorn thumblift steins also have a slightly different lid (but identical to each other) than the plain thumblift ones.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Adam,

See the June 1977 Prosit article on the Mettlach Occupationals. http://www.beerstein.net/articles/s7706.htm. This indicates that they only came with the plain figural thumblift. The original Mettlach catalog and The Mettlach book only shows the plain figural thumblifts. I would say the acorn thumblift would have to be rare. The article states that complete sets are rare and that only one is known to exist, however, I am aware of another collector that had a full set that probably was put together in the 1950s.

Complete sets can no longer be considered rare, although individual pieces in the set are scarce.
