RussellThank you all for your help on my previous request, I sincerely thank you! I have a question about a stein from Dad’s collection I intend to keep. I forwarded the pics to Charles @ stein marks, he however has been unable to identify.
This stein is very plain. Black in color, appears to have been turned out of stone (perhaps slate?). The links to the pics will follow. Stein is damaged along the lower band and handle area, and appears hastily stuck back. Just want any info or ideas of material, age and makers marks on handle. Thank y’all in advance for any ideas.Pics: https://www.dropbox.com/s/th6rs7gjua75c5f/2015-04-08%2006.05.25.jpg?dl=0

martyn brownRussell, your stein looks to be serpentine. If you have a copy ofthe beer stein book by Gary Kirsner you will see a similar one to yours on Page 118 item “e”. He dates it to the early 1700’s. I can’t help with the pewter marks. Martyn

RussellThank you, Martyn! I had the feeling it was an older one.

RussellThanks again, I did a Google search of Serpentine steins…and brought up an article by Ron in your December 2006 Prosit:) Good info!! Thanks again everyone for info, I definitely think I got a keeper! Now I just need to figure out how to find a quality repair-smith… any ideas??

RonRussel,
That article was by Ron Fox. You describe your stein as being black, but the article refers to them as usually being green in color. Is there a hint of green in your stein? Also, is the inside of the stein lined in pewter? Are there any marks on the bottom of the stein?

RonRussell,
I presume the repair is for the lower handle. It looks like it was done by an amateur. Check with a local antique dealer or jewelry company. David Harr might be able to give you some advice, but he isn’t doing much while he deals with health issues. You may have trouble getting a reply.

RussellYes, there is a slight hint of green in some of the “lines” on stein, up close the entire stein has a dark green “hue” in outside light, rather than black from a distance. Took a couple of closer shots of stein material outside.

The stein does appear very much like pics in Ron Fox’s Prosit I mentioned….it’s always difficult with color description.

RussellOh I forgot…the inside is not lined with pewter…see pic :

I turn pens and other things for fun and profit sometimes…it appears material was “turned” on lathe?

RussellI wasn’t ignoring your question about the bottom of stein…The bottom is very, very worn…that being said the only mark I can really make out, looks like an arrow/spear type mark, scratched into bottom pointing towards center. But as I say a very worn scratched bottom. Any luck with the marks on handle, anyone?

RussellLooking at the bottom of stein in certain angles/light with magnifying glass, it appears to have some design that is large on center. Kinda a coat of arms perhaps…not sure it is so faint. sorry for the multiple posts…Could not look at it last night properly, and meds dull my focus.

RussellIs there a professional source for appraisals? I live in NW Florida. Thank you in advance!
