For quite a long time we have this family relict coming from my great grand father, with no background info since my great grand father’s death after WWII. The only thing we know is that there used to be a music box in the bottom, which my grandmother broke down and then lost (when she was a little kid).

I’m hopelessly trying for quiet a long time to find any info on this beer stein (and if possible which music was inside) and to get (purchase anywhere besides fleamarkts) a separate music box to put inside this mug.

I found a very similar stein in the collection here, but still don’t have enough details.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

A nice family stein. Can you post a photo of the base (bottom)?

Hi Dimitris – It looks like it could be a Marzi & Remy Catalog Number 193, 1/2 liter stoneware relief stein. You can find information about it at The Beer Stein Library at this URL: https://www.beerstein.net/item.asp?ItemNum=mar-0193 . As Walt suggests, post a picture of the bottom, or at least cite what markings there are on it, to help in the identification. A nice family keepsake.

WOW! Thank you so much! Is it also possible to identify, what music was included in the music box?

No, there is no way to determine what song was played by the music box (unless you have the original broken one which would probably be labeled). The music boxes were made with a variety of songs which were popular at the time, the customer had their choice. Your best hope for a music box is if a collector who specializes in music boxes responds to your question.

Thank you! By any chance, do you know, are these music boxes being sold as parts somewhere besides the flea markets? I searched, but haven’t found any info…

Hi Dimitris – Looks like our posts crossed in the ether and your got there before mine. Yup, It’s a Marzi & Remy No. 193; the number is clearly visible in your photo.

Hi Dimitris – If it were me, I wouldn’t bother. It wouldn’t be the original that grand dad had and it won’t increase the value of the stein. But, if you really want to add a music box, here are three possibilities that come to mind (besides flea markets or antique shops): (1) Post a new entry here with a title something like “Looking For A Music Box For My Stein”, and describe your stein; (2) Search eBay for “Music Box Movement”; you’ll find a ton of them, almost none of which are for beer steins (but you might get lucky); (3) Search eBay for “Music Box Stein”; you will find a lot of steins with music boxes, some as cheap as $10.00 or even less. If one looks about right, you could communicate with the seller to get more detailed information as to whether or not it would be a fit. It’s a very long shot, but who knows.
