I have an old stein that I never even considered could be a Mettlach. While doing research for another stein in Kirsner’s Mettlach Book 4th edition,I spot a familiar looking stein on the bottom of page 175. It is described as 1526 1L glazed undecorated , porcelain inlay, pewter base. Mine has a closed 5 ring hinge with the 1L cap mark on the front. The only markings are inside the lid, Endres Frankfurt AM. Could this be an early Mettlach or did Mr. Endres sell the same pewter to other buyers ?

The stein is not a “Mettlach.” The only stoneware bodies are found on the Bavaria ware. The body is nearly unidentifiable but the pewtersmith is of interest. The pewter work makes an ordinary stoneware body quite attractive.

The stein on page 175 is a 1526 pottery body. The pewter may be the same but your body is just a gray stoneware body.

TBSL identifies the Brick Base steins, among others, as stoneware.

I do not claim it is a V&B stein, I only point out the unmistaken similarities to the one in the book. Maybe Chris Wheeler can help identify the Frankfurt pewterer Endres and his years of operation.

Your conclusion should be that this pewter firm did work for various manufacturers, or at least put pewter mounts on various bodies.
