I need to put together a catalog of my stein collection. I know I can put together a basic catalog using nothing but Microsoft Word that even includes photos, but I wonder if it might be useful to have more powerful categorization and search ability than Word has as well as the automatic summing of the value of each stein to provide the total value of the collection. I’d be interested in the thoughts and recommendations of those of you who have done this. Thanks!

You might try using a website instead of software. I use: http://www.mysteincollection.com/.
You can view part of my collection here. http://www.mysteincollection.com/catalogue/searchitem.php?user=231&liststyle=images&submit=go+to+my+catalogue.

    smazzone,

You will want to have a private listing for recording other information about your steins. Excel should be sufficient for that purpose. Record it in chronological sequence with separate columns for pertinent information, such as size, material, maker, type, mold number, cost, market value, etc. Then you can sort the information in any manner you want. You can keep a separate list on word with the photo. When you have a lot of steins, you might want to invest is special software.

On MySteinCollection.com it is easy to add a personal collection. If you wish to use the site just for yourself, you can mark your steins as ‘invisible’. This will prevent the steins to be visible by anyone but yourself.

Also there is room for entering the stein’s value (or purchase price) in either US$ or euro. And lastly, if you do want to list your steins visible for others (which we of course prefer), there is a ‘memo’ field where you can add any extra info. That memo and the stein’s value information will never be shown online but is only visible for you as the owner.

Future plans are to extend the site with more options for buying and selling (don’t you hate it too how expensive eBay’s become..?) and other functionality.
Any feedback or requests for such improvements are welcome.

    Prosit!
