~ Die Weisheit guter Zecher ist ~

This self explanatory verse is signed "Mirza Schaffy" and is apparently from a set of poems or songs published in 1851 by Friedrich von Bodenstedt (1819-1892). Bodenstedt studied under a famous Russian writer, Professor Schaffy Vaseh (1796-1852), in Tiflis (now Tbilisi) Georgia and adopted Mirza Schaffy as his pen name in honor of his mentor. The two people shown in the photo-transfers on the sides might be descendents of the two mentioned above or composers that put the lyrics to music. The porcelain stein is ca. late 1800's.

Die Weisheit guter Zecher ist
in früh und später Stunde
das guter Trunk in Humpen ist
und neuer Witz im Munde.
The wisdom of a good drinker is
in early and late hours
(to have) good drink in the stein
and new wit in the mouth.
