This stein is one in a seriesof Mettlach steins representing German folk songs and legends called the "Brick Wall" series for obvious reasons and numbered 2833. This one is 2833 C and has a scene of the famous "Lorelei" (murmuring rock) on the Rhein. The myth of a forlorn but beautiful woman that died here was written about and put to song in the 19th century and it is said that she lured many boats with there crews to their demise at this point. Only the first line of the song is on the stein, but the entire first stanza is included for completion.
Ich weiß nicht was soll es bedeuten daß ich so trauerig bin: Ein Märchen aus uralten Zeiten, das kommt mir nicht aus dem Sinn.	I do not know what it should mean that I am feeling so sad.... There is an age-old tale that I cannot erase from my mind.
