The verse means to drink to your heart's content, but not too much on this large, salt-glazed, stoneware, pouring stein probably made by Dümler & Breiden, but marked only "168", ca. 1900.
 
Trinke in Freuden,
halt' dich bescheiden.
Drink joyfully,
(but) remain modest.
