presented on this relief, 2.7 liter pitcher marked with the Mettlach logo and mold number 409 and dated 1884.
 
Wenn mein Pfeifchen dampft und glüht
und der Rauch von Blättern zieht,


kein Feuer kein Kohle kann brennen so heiß
als heimliche Lieb von der niemand nichts weiß.

Wer niemals einen Rausch gehabt
der ist kein braver Mann für wahr.

Freut Euch des Lebens
weil noch das Lämpchen glüht.
When my little pipe steams and glows
and the smoke from the (tobacco) leaves rises,

no fire no coals can burn so hot
as love for home that nobody doesn't know.

He who has never been drunk
is not a good fellow for sure.

Take joy of life
while the little lamp still glows.
